COPE 378 Members were joined by Vancouver Councillor Raymond Louie and the RCMP's Labour Liasion

COPE 378 members and staff joined activists and supporters from throughout the labour movement at the BC Federation of Labour's Annual International Women's Day Breakfast in Burnaby this morning.

The breakfast is held every year in conjunction with labour and community sponsored events throughout BC.

COPE 378 Staff Join the Pink Shirt Campaign

COPE 378 Pink Shirt Day

Staff and officers at the COPE 378 office today embraced the Pink Shirt Campaign against bullying.

The international campaign started in Nova Scotia in response to a bullying incident in a school, when other students began to wear pink shirts in support of the bullied student. The movement took off and schools and workplaces around the world now participate in the event annually on February 27.

The COPE 378 Executive Council endorsed the event at their meeting on February 11, and the office staff at the Union, and members at workplaces around the province wore pink today in support of the campaign.

Focus Groups Give Input on Union`s Direction

COPE 378 is conducting focus groups on Tuesday February 26 in an effort to help guide the start up of its new Young Workers and Retirees Committees.

The Focus Groups are being conducted via a partnership with Douglas College's marketing program, and led by two students who are developing a marketing plan with recomendations for the two committee' outreach plans.

The first set of focus groups are being targetted to COPE 378 members who are reitred or appraoching retirement.

The second sessions are for members who are under 30 years of age.

March 8 is International Women's Day, and the COPE 378 Women's Committee, alongside the BC Federation of Labour and sisters and brothers across the province will be participating in a number of events.

COPE 378's Provincial Budget Response

With the release of the Provincial Government's Budget on Tuesday, February 19, COPE 378 has worked to strip off the "Green Veneer" of the Budget, and dilute some of the government's hurculean spin efforts.

President Andy Ross, Vice President Gwenne Farrell, and Director of Communications Mike Bruce all attended the pre-budget lockup on Tuesday. The lockup is intended to give provincial stakeholders an advance look at the budget in order to prepare their responses for the media. While provided with advance access, stakeholders are sequestered in a locked environment and have to surrender all cell phones and electronic communication devices.

Raise the Minimum Wage Rally!

Join the BC Federation of Labour's Young Workers Committee, COPE 378 members and activists of all ages this Saturday for a Raise the Minimum Wage Rally at Gordon Campbell's Constituency Office.
COPE 378 President Andy Ross and BC Federation of Labour President Jiim Sinclair will both be speaking at the event, which starts at 1 PM at 3615 West 4th Avenue in Vancouver.

The first COPE 378 Executive Council meeting of 2008 was held on February 11 in Burnaby.
Councillors from around the province gathered to consider a number of pending priorities, including the 2008 operating budget, the upcoming COPE 378 elections, and a number of new policy resolutions.

2008 Operating Budget

 Councillors considered and passed the union’s 2008 Operating Budget, prepared by COPE 378 Secretary-Treasurer Lori Mayhew.
Highlights of the budget included increases in membership revenue, several increases in core committee budgets, and the continued growth of the Job Defence Fund to over $15 million.
